adidas Creators Games

Project completed, 2017–2018

Tous les projets adidas →

A website for adidas sports competitions in Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan, and then a community platform for a whole season: challenges, weekly training plans, a meal plan, body transformation, quizzes, an academy, a leaderboard and a personal account.

Client and task

Creators Games is an adidas project for people who want to do sport without being professionals. In 2017 it was a competition in cities across Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan: training in five-a-side football, athletics and cheer dance, regional qualifiers and a final in Moscow. It needed a website where people learn the rules, find their city and a training session, apply and see the results, while the organisers run applications, schedules and results in one admin panel.

By the next season the format had grown from a competition into a six-month programme: a new task every few weeks, training and meal plans, progress tracking, articles and quizzes, adidas Academy seminars and an overall leaderboard that decides the best "multi-athlete". It needed a new platform: a website with a personal account, an API and an admin panel for the project team.

What we built

First the 2017 competition website, then the platform for the 2017/18 season.

2017 website: maps of Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan with host cities

Host cities and rules

Maps of Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan with the host cities, the rules and regulations, the stages of the season from training to regional qualifiers and the final in Moscow. A separate page explains that participants need an adidas Universe card and where to get one.

In a couple of minutes a visitor knows whether the games come to their city and what it takes to take part.

2017 website: participant application form

Participant application

A seven-step path: rules, sign-up, choosing a sport, contacting the sports community leader in your city, kit, schedule. The application form takes the city and discipline from reference lists, citizenship, the Universe card, how the person heard about the games and the consents. The applicant gets an email, and the organisers export applications from the admin panel by date, country and city.

Applications arrive in one format and are easy to sort by city.

2017 website: discipline results with team, city and time; participant names hidden

Schedule and results

A training schedule by city and week: date, venue, discipline, coach; a search for the community leader by city. Results for every discipline, separately for men and women, with search, sorting and pagination: 100 metres, kettlebell swings, 3000 metres, burpees, pull-ups and more. News, schedules and results are managed in the admin panel.

Participants find their session and see where they stand among everyone in the same discipline.

2018 home page: three programme tracks and sign-up

The 2018 platform home page

The programme is split into tracks: "Show what you can do" with personal challenges, "Team battle" with tasks for employee teams, "More about sport" with articles and quizzes, and "Your start" for beginners. Next to them are upcoming events, a "Suggest your own event" form, the leaderboard and prizes: the best multi-athlete after six months wins tickets to the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Everyone picks their own way to take part, and activity in any track counts towards the overall score.

Challenge page: exercises, rules and result upload

Challenges

Four waves from November 2017 to May 2018: Start, Power, Speed and Drive. Each has a set of exercises, rules, a technique video and deadlines. Participants submit their time and a video link on the challenge page or in their account; the best results are published separately for men and women. The team battle uses the same tasks, and the captain submits the team's result.

Every few weeks a participant gets a new task and a new place on the leaderboard.

Training page: a weekly plan by day with warm-up, exercise blocks and stretching

Weekly training plans

A day-by-day plan to prepare for the challenges: warm-up, exercise blocks, rest, stretching and challenge days. The load is set by the number of rounds for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.

People prepare for a task by plan, not by guesswork.

Personal account: profile, tracks, monthly measurements, friend invitation and challenge progressPersonal transformation on a phone: BMI and body measurements

Transformation and personal account

A participant enters weight and height with a body mass index calculation, waist, chest, hip and biceps measurements, target figures after six months of training, a sports goal in their own words and a "before" photo. The next measurement opens on schedule, a bar shows progress, and the transformation earns points. The account shows points, monthly measurements, the goal, challenges, the leaderboard and friend invitations.

Progress is visible in numbers, and the goal is always in sight.

Weight-correction meal plan by gender, age, weight and height, training days in yellow

Meal plan

Three programmes: weight correction, muscle gain and keeping fit. A participant enters gender, age, weight and height and gets a two-week menu: five meals a day with portions recalculated for their data. Training days are marked in the table, and portions on those days get bigger.

The menu adapts to a specific person and their training schedule.

Quiz on football knowledge with multiple-choice answers

"More about sport" and quizzes

Articles on running, nutrition and training, athletes' stories, book and film picks. Quizzes with multiple-choice answers go with the articles, plus a final quiz at the end of the season. Quiz points count towards the overall leaderboard. Questions for a coach can be sent right from the website.

Even those not ready for physical tasks yet can take part and earn points.

adidas Academy: seminars and blog

adidas Academy

A section for adidas educational programmes: seminars in Moscow and webinars open to everyone, a blog on motivation, sleep and nutrition, and the academy's contacts.

Between challenges, participants have something to read and somewhere to go.

Admin panel: editing a challenge

Admin panel and API

The website and the admin panel run on one API. In the admin panel the project team manages challenges (texts in a rich editor, dates, video, result unit and type, images for locked, open and finished challenges), publications, quizzes with questions and correct answers, events and users. People sign up with a form on the website or with their profile on Creators Hub, the adidas employee portal.

The project team publishes new waves, articles and quizzes on its own, without developers.

How it works

The 2017 website is built on Laravel with its own admin panel for applications, schedules, results and news. The 2018 platform has three parts: a public single-page app on Vue, an API on Laravel and an admin panel on Vue with CoreUI; data lives in PostgreSQL, sign-in uses tokens, including sign-in via Creators Hub. Builds and deployment go as Docker images through GitLab CI to Kubernetes.

Timeline and scale

  1. January 2017 a "Coming to your city soon" teaser page with a project video.
  2. February 2017 the competition website: host cities, rules, participant application.
  3. March – July 2017 news, training schedules by city, results by discipline.
  4. September – October 2017 work on the new platform begins: website, API and admin panel.
  5. November 2017 the season starts with the first challenge, Creators Games: Start.
  6. January – May 2018 the Power, Speed and Drive challenges, the transformation, meal plan and academy sections, quizzes.
  7. September 2018 final admin panel updates. After the season the public website was replaced with a notice: the programme stayed available to employees on Creators Hub.

Scale: 8 repositories and about 3,000 commits — the 2017 website with its teaser and environment, the 2018 website, API and admin panel. According to the "About" page of the website, the 2017 season covered 180 cities in three countries.

What the client got

  • One website for the whole competition season

Rules, cities, applications, schedules and results for three countries in one place, with applications and results managed in the admin panel.

  • From a competition to a six-month programme

The 2018 platform keeps participants engaged between events: tasks, training, nutrition, measurements and articles.

  • One points system for every format

Challenges, quizzes, events, transformation and friend invitations add up to the multi-athlete leaderboard.

  • Content without developers

The project team publishes new waves, articles and quizzes in the admin panel.

Status

Project completed. We worked on it in 2017–2018: the 2017 season website and the 2017/18 season platform. The website is no longer online; the screens were restored from the web archive and the source code.
