YBER Parking: booking berths for yachts in marinas

Prototype, 2020

A service where a yacht owner finds a marina with a free berth that fits their boat and books it online, while the marina runs its piers, requests, services and prices. A platform concept analysis and a clickable prototype of 150-plus screens.

Client and task

In May 2020 the client came with the idea of a digital platform covering the whole life of a yacht: managing the vessel and the fleet, sales and charter, berths, and analytics across all the data. We started with a concept analysis, going through each area: competitors, must-have features, the quality bar and MVP metrics. The conclusion: if the platform is launched piece by piece, it should start with a service for marinas. That sector is the least digitised, and a product can stand out there with a visual pier configurator used both to manage and to sell berths, extra services and a booking widget for the marina's own site.

That is how YBER Parking came about. A yacht owner looks for a berth that fits the boat's length, beam and draft on the right dates, books it, orders services and pays online or on site. The marina gets requests, payments and documents in one account and sets its own booking rules. In summer 2020 we worked the service out for both sides down to every screen — from search on the map to the end of the stay, emails and reviews — so that the product could be judged and built from the prototype.

What we worked out

A concept analysis and 153 prototype pages: screens, dialogs and emails for the yacht owner and the marina operator; most screens also have a phone layout.

Platform scheme from the concept analysis: Vessel, Fleet, Agency, Aggregator, Data and Dock modules

Concept analysis and the choice of MVP

A platform of six modules: vessel management (YBER Vessel) and fleet management (Fleet), sales and charter (Agency), a charter aggregator (Aggregator), berths (Dock) and analytics (Data). For each, competitors, must-have features, the quality bar and launch effort. The outcome: start with YBER Dock, then add extra services and sales. MVP metrics: how many minutes it takes to set up a marina, how many sites carry the widget and how many marinas have joined.

The client invests in one module with a clear edge, not in a platform that takes years to build.

Berth search: filters by yacht and dates, marinas on the map, how many berths fit and are free

Search for a berth by yacht size

The owner picks a yacht and dates, and the map shows marinas and how many berths fit the length, beam and draft and are free. It covers “you can moor alongside another boat” and “three berths will be free soon”, a hint to enter the draft, a filter by services and favourites. A new yacht can be saved right from the search.

You see at once where the boat will fit, without calling round marinas.

Marina page: plan of two piers, fitting berths highlighted, berth search for dates

A marina and a berth on the pier plan

A marina has a plan of its piers: berths that fit and are free stand out, the rest are greyed. A berth card shows the allowed size, whether a second boat can moor alongside, what is on site (fuel, water, power, Wi‑Fi) and the price for the chosen dates. Next to it are the description, services, photos, eco features and reviews.

A berth is chosen by eye, as on the pier, not by a number from a list.

Booking, “Services” step: fuel by the litre, booking summary on the sideBooking, “Confirmation” step: cancellation and payment terms, card hold, acceptance of the offer

Booking in five steps

Yacht details, documents, services, payment and confirmation; a booking summary on the side grows step by step, and the chosen berth is hidden from others for ten minutes. Services are added to the stay: fuel by the litre, water, repairs, some priced after inspecting the yacht. Payment is online or at the marina; online, the amount is held on the card and charged after the marina confirms. Free cancellation terms and the penalty are shown before the request is sent. Booking works without signing up too — the booking is linked to an account later.

The owner knows in advance what they will pay and what a cancellation costs.

A yacht's bookings on a phone: current and past, statuses and amounts

The yacht owner's account

Bookings for each yacht with statuses: awaiting confirmation, unpaid, details changed, declined; cancelling a booking; the yacht's stay history on a map, filled in from past bookings; the yacht's registration and specs. An email comes for every event: confirmation, a refusal with the reason, a charge for services rendered.

All of a yacht's stays and documents in one place, on a phone as well.

Marina overview: berths for the day by status, totals, occupancy scale, booking tooltip

Marina overview for the operator

The pier plan for a chosen day: occupied, free, overstayed, paid, pay on site, unpaid — with marina totals and an occupancy scale months ahead. For each berth you see the booking, the client and the yacht, and a berth can be closed for booking.

The operator sees the whole marina and the problem berths at a glance.

A booking at the marina: services with “done” and “paid” marks, booking controls, the client

Requests and bookings

A table of bookings by status — new, confirmed, at the marina, finished, declined archive — with filters, amounts and the auto-confirmation time. Inside a booking: changing the berth and dates with a recalculated price, “done” and “paid” marks for each service, the yacht's status (at the marina, left, didn't arrive), the contract and acts, a review of the client. The operator can also add a booking for a service user or a new client.

Calls, paperwork and on-site payment come together in one booking card.

Configurator, prices as a table: by pier, berth type and length of stay

Berth and price configurator

The marina draws its piers on a map or satellite image, automatically or by hand, sets berth types by size and places them along the piers. The daily price is a base rate per berth type plus adjustments for the pier, length of stay, season and how far ahead the booking is made; the result is shown on the plan or as a table.

The marina sets up its own plan and flexible prices, without a service manager.

Booking settings: cancellation penalty, request approval, taking requests, page visibility

Booking rules and marina onboarding

A cancellation penalty, how requests are approved — instantly, after a set number of hours or by hand — pausing requests and hiding the page. A new marina and its documents are checked by the service's administrators. For promotion there is a printable notice with a QR code for reviews, a QR code to the marina's page and an online booking widget for the yacht club's own site.

Each marina works by its own rules and takes bookings on its own site too.

What it gave

  • Focus instead of a years-long platform

The analysis showed where to begin: a service for marinas, where the product has a visible edge and the launch costs less than the other modules.

  • The product is visible before development

Both sides' scenarios are put together in a clickable prototype, from searching for a berth to the end of the stay and reviews.

  • Money is thought through in advance

A hold on the card, a charge after confirmation, a cancellation penalty and services priced after inspection — the payment rules are clear to the yacht owner and the marina alike.

  • States, not pictures

Screens come with errors, empty lists and variants, with notes on behaviour, so the prototype can be estimated and built from.

  • Phone and the marina's site

Most screens also work on a phone, and the widget takes bookings right on a yacht club's site.

Status

The project stopped at the prototype stage in 2020. The concept analysis and the prototype were done from May to September 2020.
